Rodents by the Pool

Some brazen rodents have been sighted in the brush by the deep end of the pool.  We've set a couple of traps at night (removed during the day), and LR Pest Control is coming tomorrow.  In the meanwhile, please stay out of the bushes around the pool and be extra diligent about cleaning up after yourself.  Removing a pest's food supply is the best way to discourage it from coming on our property.

See you at the club!

July Workday is scheduled for this Saturday from 9am-4pm.  There is a morning shift at 9am, a BBQ at noon, and an afternoon shift starting at 1pm.  See the website for a list of projects.  Again, you only need to participate in one workday shift each summer to satisfy your capital improvement obligation, or if you choose, you can pay the $45 fee.

Weekend Staffing

Due to increased club usage on weekends this year, we will be staffing the office and adding a lifeguard shift from 12-4pm for the next three weekends.  Continuation of these shifts through August will be based on the level of usage at the club.

Kid's Fair

Kid's fair is coming to BTC on Thursday, July 28th from 1-4pm.  Stay tuned for more details in the next newsletter.

Racquet Demo Day Next Saturday

As a special treat next weekend, Norm Martell from the Twin Oaks Pro Shop is providing demo racquets on Saturday July 23rd during the morning drop-ins.  Participation in the drop-ins is not required, so bring a partner and try out a swank new racquet!

Maintenance Items at BTC

BTC has two major maintenance items on the slate for 2011.  The pool patio is very slippery when wet and we plan to grit-paint the surface to provide more traction.  Unfortunately, this project requires that we block off the pool patio for 48 hours.  We've looked at other option including scarifying, acid washing, and epoxy but covering it with grit paint is the most straight forward method to address this problem.  We will keep you informed as to when this project will occur.

Secondly, we had planned to fix the crater in the shallow end of the pool during the spring before pool opening.  However, this requires us to empty 2/3 of the water which would cause the pool to rise and buckle due to the high ground water table during the spring.  This project will instead happen this fall after the pool closes and the ground water table is low.  In the meanwhile, please be aware of the crater and be careful when playing in the shallow end.

If you see any other safety items that we need to address, please contact Erik at the front desk.

See you at the club!

2011 Member Welcome Letter

[PDF of the original document]

Welcome

Welcome to Burlington Tennis Club for Summer 2011! In this membership packet, you will find this welcome letter, your membership card(s), and 3 guest passes.

We've made a number of changes to the club this year with one goal in mind – to provide our members the absolute best summer experience in Chittenden County.

First of all, we are excited to have Erik Kaarla as our general manager for 2011. He will be on site and available on the weekdays all summer long to ensure that the club runs smoothly. Please feel free to come to him with any questions or concerns, or just to say hi. During the winter months, Erik is an English instructor at Champlain College, CCV, and Saint Michael's, but he's also an avid tennis player with experience running programs at Burlington Parks and Rec, Quarry Hill, and Colchester Recreation Dept. Erik is looking forward to providing the absolute best summer experience for BTC members.

Also new for 2011, we will be issuing membership cards. One of Erik's duties is to monitor access to the club, so until he learns your name and face, showing your membership cards will help identify you as a member. While we all love the relaxed atmosphere at BTC, we also recognize the need to ensure that everyone using the facilities is either a paying member or registered guest.

And finally, we are opening up an official Pro Shop at the front desk. We will sell balls, overgrips, sunblock, swim goggles, BTC shirts, and other convenience items. If you have suggestions for items that we should stock, please let Erik know. And, as with previous years, our multi-talented Tennis Pros are offering restringing services.

The Woody Classic

The Woody Classic, our all wooden racquet tournament, was a huge success last year. This year, it will be held from August 12th through August 14th and we expect it to be even bigger. This event is open to members and non-members and will attract lots of talented players to our courts, so even if you don't play tennis, it will still be a lot of fun to watch.

Important Reminders

Remember to bring your membership card to the club with each visit, and please sign the log book as this helps us track usage. You only need to sign in once per day.

Opening/Lockup Procedures

BTC is a member owned club and as such our members are allowed unrestricted access to the club. However, with this privilege also comes responsibility. If you are the last to leave in the evening, please make sure to lock up the clubhouse and turn off the lights.

The combination to the front door is XXXX. Press the combination on the keypad. While the green light is blinking, turn the knob on the keypad counter clock-wise. To lock the door, just enter the combination and turn the knob on the keypad clock-wise while the green light is blinking. Note that the front door will not lock automatically behind you. The porch doors and pool side door use a simple dead bolt lock. If you used the pool, please make sure the padlock on the pool shed is locked as well.

Tennis Reservations

Court reservations can be made up to 5 days in advance by calling the office at 863-3439 or on the website at http://www.burlingtontennis.com/tennis/schedule-a-court/. If you are a tennis member, your reservation ID is printed on the top of this letter and on your membership card.

Wireless Access

BTC provides a free WiFi connection called “BTC WIRELESS”.  The network is available around the clubhouse, porch, picnic tables, and pool.

The Grill

The grill on the back porch is open to all members. It has an electric ignition. Just open the lid, turn on the gas, and press the black button until it lights. Please make sure the gas is completely off and the grill is clean when you are finished using it. There are two canisters of propane under the grill and two more in the closet next to the vending machines. If you run out of gas, please inform a staff member or leave a note at the office.

Club Etiquette

Aside from our official policies listed on the website http://www.burlingtontennis.com/about/policies/, here are some common-sense reminders.

  1. We are member-owned club with minimal staff. Please pitch in and clean up after yourself. Trash cans and recycle bins are located in the clubhouse and in the pool area.

  2. Respect the club as you would respect your own property. Unnecessary wear and tear costs all of us in the form of dues.

  3. If you see something that needs attention or could possibly pose a hazard, please inform a staff member, a board member, or email webmaster@burlingtontennis.com. If we don't know about it, we can't fix it.

  4. No wet feet inside the clubhouse! The floor gets very slippery when wet. Please dry off before entering the clubhouse.

  5. Children under the age of 14 may not be left at the club without adult supervision.

  6. Please wear appropriate attire on the tennis courts, especially shoes.

  7. Sweep your court after playing as a courtesy to the next group.

Guest Procedures

If you bring a guest, please sign them in and pay at the front desk. If the office is not staffed, just put your guest fees in the white box outside the front door. You can also mail your guest fees to BTC, PO Box 143, Burlington, VT 05402. Remember that guests from Chittenden County are only allowed 3 visits per season. Guest rates for 2011 are listed below:
